Three years on from the historic discovery of the wreck of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s polar exploration vessel, the ENDURANCE, which sank on 21st November 1915 after becoming trapped in the Antarctic ice 10 months previously, on 18th January 1914, the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust announces a new project to develop a definitive interactive route map of the entire Weddell Sea search mission.
The FMHT map reveals for the first time the day-by-day route of the South African icebreaker, AGULHAS II, which was used by the expedition to find the long-lost ship.
The first stage – HOW WE FOUND THE ENDURANCE – is released today as an 18-minute animated video which shows the successful search-and-find voyage across the 20 days it took to find the iconic vessel.
The wreck of the ENDURANCE was found on 5th March 2022 – Day 18 of the hunt – on the sea floor at a depth of 3,008 metres (9,869 feet).
