Spirit of Shackleton Officially Launches

New Vessel Embarks on Mission Inspired by Exploration, Education and Ocean Discovery

The Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust (FMHT) was delighted to attend the official launch of the Spirit of Shackleton, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter in maritime exploration, ocean science and youth engagement.

The beautifully restored 70-foot racing yacht has been launched by the Atlantic Shackleton Global Foundation as the first phase of an ambitious programme designed to inspire future generations through adventure, education and hands-on experience at sea.

Several FMHT Trustees and Chief Operating Officer Elena Lewendon attended the launch celebrations, which included a ceremony officiated by the President of Ireland and a reception at the Maritime Museum.

For FMHT, the project has particular significance. The vessel takes its inspiration from the enduring legacy of Sir Ernest Shackleton, whose leadership, resilience and spirit of exploration continue to inspire people around the world more than a century after the Endurance expedition.

The aims of the Spirit of Shackleton closely align with FMHT’s own mission to preserve and share maritime heritage while inspiring new audiences through stories of exploration, discovery and human endeavour. Through youth sailing opportunities, educational programmes and future scientific initiatives, the project seeks to ensure that Shackleton’s legacy remains a living force for good rather than simply a chapter in history.

The launch of Spirit of Shackleton also represents an important milestone in the wider vision of the Atlantic Shackleton Global Foundation, which continues to develop plans for Endurance 2, a future polar-capable scientific and exploration vessel that will support research, education and international collaboration.

As the organisation behind the discovery of Endurance in 2022, FMHT understands the power of exploration to inspire curiosity, innovation and ambition. Projects such as Spirit of Shackleton help carry those values forward, connecting new generations with the ocean, science and the spirit of adventure that defined Shackleton’s life.

FMHT congratulates the Atlantic Shackleton Global Foundation and everyone involved in bringing the project to life and looks forward to supporting its journey in the years ahead.
