23 more ships that were wrecked or sunk in and around the Falkland Islands have been added to the Trust’s Maritime Archive, which brings the total number of historic vessels and their stories to 152 – with more to come.
The archive can be used in conjunction with the FMHT Interactive Wreck Hunters Map, which the Trust introduced as a novel way to discover and explore wrecks and vessels in and around the Falkland Islands or closely linked to them. Features on the map include the ability to zoom in to wrecks so you can see them eve n when they’ve disappeared below the water.
It is estimated that there are as many as 200 wrecks in and around the islands. Although there have been millions of words written about these ships and what really happened to them, there isn’t a single database that students, historians and scholars can access to check their facts and accurately locate last resting places.
The archive is curated by Peter Beardmore.
