Reports of the sinking of the ZONE, an English built brigantine came on the 2nd September 1867 when a Welsh barque, the HUASCO, 63 days out of Swansea bound for Valparaiso, with three passengers,16 crew and a cargo of coal, arrived in the Falkland Islands and landed the crew of the ZONE in Stanley, with the news that she had foundered at sea after springing a leak. The HUASCO had also been involved in drama, because it also had on board two men from a Dutch Brigantine, the JEANETTE ROBLINE, which had been “run down” by the HUASCO, which was captained by one Joseph Best. News of the loss of the ZONE was sent to the Port of Liverpool by the Colonial Secretary and Shipping Master in the Falklands: “Pursuant to the 53rd section of the Merchant Shipping act of 1854, have the honour to forward herewith of Registry of the Brig[antine] ZONE of Liverpool, official number 17,850, delivered to me by the Master Joseph A. Best.”
