On 11th November 1850, WALDRON caught fire on latitude 54˚21’S. She made for Staten Island, distant about 23 miles. On the 13th, she could not make Staten Island, and on the 14th, bore away for Falkland Islands, the smoke at the time bursting through the upper works. – On 15th November, at 22:00, she made the West Falkland, and being at the head of a bay (Cathcart’s Island) [no such Island has been identified, unknown Island], and unable to get at the cables, took in all sail and got into the boats. It is believed that she was abandoned between Carcass Island and New Island, most likely in the vicinity of West Point Island as Captain Frederick Moore reported, when rescued, that he had seen a wrecked vessel near that of the GRANITE which was wrecked on West Point Island.
