The VICTOR was built for, and owned by, John Phillips of Stanley and spent her entire career as a coastal vessel – collecting penguin eggs, seal skins and oil. In 1860, she helped salvage goods from two wrecks: in February, the fully-rigged American wooden cargo ship, SEA RANGER, which ran ashore in East Falkland, and, in June, the full-rigged Hamburg cargo vessel, HORATIO, which was wrecked at Bull Point, East Falkland. Nothing is known about how the VICTOR came to be wrecked. The time of her loss coincided with a period – 1867 – when no Falkland Islands Company records are available and before any local press existed.
