According to newspaper reports quoting survivors, the Panama registered squid jigger SERREKUNDA 3 suddenly listed, capsized and then sank quickly at about 05:50 in the morning off 9th April 1993 whilst northeast of MacBride Head, East Falkland. No distress signal was sent and the alarm wasn’t raised for nearly eight hours, until the reefer BOLIVAR TRADER spotted floating wreckage 20 to 30 miles from shore. This sparked a massive search and rescue effort involving the Falkland Islands’ Government fishery protection plane, a Royal Air Force helicopter, and a Hercules, as well as the fishery Patrol vessel CORDELLA and a Polish trawler LACURIA. The helicopter rescued 15 of the SERREKUNDA 3’s crew and took them to hospital. The CORDELLA, LACURIA and BOLIVAR TRADER searched in vain for the remaining 17 members of the mixed nationality crew without success.
