On 4th September 1859, the fully-rigged American cargo ship, RUSSELL, was returning to Stanley harbour from an attempt to round Cape Horn which had left her “strained and leaky”. When sailing passing between the Billy Rock and Seal Rocks, instead of going outside, she struck the eastern end of the Billy Rock. Holed, she drifted to nearby Kidney Island in Berkeley Sound, where – half an hour after striking the rock – she went down in deep water. Her crew got into three boats and rowed to the nearest land. The Falkland Islands schooner, VICTORIA, went to Berkeley Sound and brought back all 21 survivors, their three lifeboats and the personal baggage belonging to captain and crew’. Everything else was lost.
