On 14th September 1871, the Falkland Islands Governor, George D’Arcy, sent a despatch from Stanley to London: “On 11th September, the PRINCESS, which had been recently repaired in this Port, sprung a leak again in attempting to round Cape Horn, and was subsequently compelled to run for these Islands. On reaching Port Sussex, a northwestern Harbour of the East Falkland Island, in a sinking condition, she was beached by her Master. I have dispatched the Colonial Schooner FOAM to the wreck to render assistance.” The local FIC manager also reported the loss to London: “The PRINCESS, Captain Thomas, lately here, has been wrecked on the reef outside Port Sussex. I offered my services, but he went to his former agent. I don’t think much cargo will be saved. Captain Laws [schooner FAIRY] has brought a load in and is to get another being paid £150.” In a twist to the tale, on 25th September, the schooner LOTUS sailed for Chile with some of the survivors, who would be shipwrecked again.
