Falklanders learned about the loss of the PORVENIR on the 15th December 1948 from ‘The Falkland Islands Weekly News’: “The schooner PORVENIR, with a cargo of lambs, went aground on a reef at Kidney Island, off Lively Island, late on Wednesday night. A message received from Mr. Gilruth at Darwin, said that the PORVENIR, was being ‘buffeted by strong winds’, and that her position was fast becoming dangerous. The two-man crew were saved, but not so some of the lambs, at the cost of some Christmas lunches in Stanley.” In the months that followed the grounding, numerous attempts were made to pull the PORVENIR off the rocks. Mainly by the Falkland Island Government’s PHILOMEL and the Royal Research Ship JOHN BISCOE. All failed.
