PALOMA was formerly a steam tender called WASP, which was too under-powered to be a tug and was mainly used as a harbour vessel. After she was converted to a schooner, WASP was renamed PALOMA. On the night of 8th April 1948, according to Falkland Islands’ press reports, the PALOMA was anchored at Triste Island, off East Falkland, when windy and snowy conditions rapidly deteriorated. Unable to get into the open sea the crew tried to run the vessel towards a reef to give them a chance of getting ashore. Having run aground the crew managed to escape across the rocks but the PALOMA was a total loss.
