On 12th April 1855, the American barque, ORTONA, with Captain Carleton in charge, arrived in the Falkland Islands with a cargo of lumber, traveling between Belfast, Rio de Janeiro and Valparaiso. She had encountered severe weather and lost her sails. Repairs were carried out in Stanley but, on 25th April, the night before her departure, she caught fire and after two days was burned to her water line. Nothing of value was saved, and Captain Carleton and his1st and 2nd Mates sailed for Liverpool aboard the British Barque CLYMENE on 22nd May. The remainder of the ORTONA’s crew remained in Stanley and left, the following day, as members of the crew of the local schooner FAIRY, under Captain John Wood, heading for Bull Point in East Falkland, to recover the cargo and effects of the wrecked American barque COURIER.
