The MENAI STRAITS, from Carnarvon in Wales, was on a voyage from Fleetwood in Lancashire, England, to Antofagasta in Chile, with the cargo of coal, when her crew discovered the coal was on fire. She headed for the Falklands, and Port Stanley, when she encountered fog. According to reports she drifted to the entrance of Port Salvador in East Falkland, on 15th November 1884, where she anchored. The fire became so fierce that the crew abandoned ship and she was totally burned. Her owner was named as a Thomas Morris Griffiths of Carnarvon.
