Captained by Peter Burnett, the Peterhead registered MARY GRAY was on a voyage from Santos, Brazil to Valparaiso, Chile with a general cargo on 18th January 1845. The ship and cargo were lost. – The vessel encountered a heavy gale, and suffered much damage before going ashore. — Burnett and five of the crew rowed to Port Louis in the ship’s boat leaving six of the crew on Pebble Island. The six crew were rescued by the local Schooner RENIVA. On 6th February 1845, Captain Burnett sold the remains of the MARY GRAY as she lay at Pebble Island, and the ship’s boat at Port Louis, for a sum of £17. — Some ill-researched sources, erroneously report this vessel, variously, as the JANE GRAY or MARY GREY, and some, as an American vessel.
