On 9th September 1885, the mate from the Italian built barque LUIGIA S arrived in the Falkland Islands capital on foot to report his ship ‘wrecked’ on Ruggles Island, off East Falkland, with a cargo of marble. On 28th September, the local Falkland Islands Company manager and Italian Consul, sent a message to London saying they had been to the island in a ship called MALVINAS: “I went to the wreck of the LUIGIA S. which I found full of water up to her ‘tween deck.” The despatch gave details of a salvage operation in which the MALVINAS was awarded 50% of the cargo saved and another vessel, PERSEVERANCE, got 35% of the value. A month later another message said: “About 400 tons of cargo ex-LUIGIA S. salved by MALVINAS and PERSEVERANCE is being shipped by the THEBEN.” In 1994 a team of divers Stanley found the LUIGIA S lying in about eight metres of water near Ruggles Island and reported ‘an intact cargo of marble’. It’s also said there are two small marble statues from LUIGIA S in Stanley.
