The LORD SHACKLETON II started to sink in deep water about 500 yards off the wildlife sanctuary of Beauchene Island. She stayed with just her bow above the water for 12 hours before sinking. All 43 crew were rescued by the Spanish ship NUEVO ALCOCERO. — A preliminary enquiry suggested metal fatigue may have allowed sea water, used for cooling parts of the engine, to escape and flood the rear of the ship, which was understood to have an insured value of between £3-£4m. At the time, there was concern that the sunken vessel might pollute the coastline and wildlife.
