At 04:46 on the morning of 17th April, the HWA JAAN 16 was heading into Berkeley Sound, intending to transship its catch of squid onto a waiting cargo ship, when she grounded at Volunteer Point. The crew of 31 abandoned ship in three life rafts. Three local agency launches, a helicopter and another fishing vessel were at the scene within 90 minutes. While the helicopter checked the vessel to ensure no one remained aboard, the survivors were taken in the launches to Stanley. Around six hours later, at 10:18, the squid jigger sank some 4.3 nautical miles E.S.E. of Eagle Point. The vessel was believed to have had around 60 tonnes of gas oil on board. A fisheries surveillance aircraft subsequently reported an oil slick approximately three nautical miles long by 300-400 metres wide drifting E.S.E. but dissipating rapidly.
