GRANITE, Captain William Upton, was on a voyage from Boston, Massachusetts to California. – William describes the ordeal in a letter to his brother Samuel: “I am sorry to inform you of the loss of the brig which took place on the 27th of July at West Bay [Point?] Falkland Islands. The particulars of which are: At 01:00, being a length off the rocks, the sea making a clear break over her, we left her in the long boat and made shore with great difficulty barely saving our lives. At 11:00, the vessel struck and went to pieces after which we got some provisions and a few clothes from the wreck which we subsisted on till the 22nd of October when we were taken off by a sealing boat belonging to Stanley…”
